Water and Electricity DON’T MIX!

Water and Electricity DON’T MIX!

If your home or business is flooded, THINK SAFE AROUND ELECTRICITY!

It is important to remember that water and electricity DO NOT mix.  If you find yourself in the unfortunate circumstance of having water in your home or business, it is important to think before you act.  We know you are in a hurry to get things back to normal, but if water levels have risen to the level of baseboard heaters or electricity outlets, it’s possible the water is energized and potentially lethal. Water could also come through your electrical panel. If you find yourself in any of these circumstances – STAY AWAY!

The first thing you should do if you are concerned water may have interacted with an electrical source in your home or business is to SHUT OFF POWER. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you make contact with water in order to attempt to shut off power. To guarantee there is no power running through your home, power must be disconnected through your meter. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DO THIS YOURSELF. A certified electrician can help, or you can call us at 1-800-474-5711. When in doubt…reach out, we are here to help.

It is also important to be smart outside of your home.  After storms, high winds may have caused downed power lines and trees falling into lines. Always assume downed lines are energized. Electricity and water is just as dangerous outside as it is inside.  Be vigilant and look for downed lines. If you find one STAY AWAY and call us immediately.  For more information about downed lines visit http://www.newfoundlandpower.com/ElectricalSafety/DownedPowerLines/Default.aspx

Does Your Town Project Need a Little Boost?

NLP - TAKECHARGE OF YOUR TOWN - FB POSTNewfoundland Power is pleased to tell you The takeCHARGE of Your Town Challenge can help! Since the initial challenge in 2010, takeCHARGE has granted $40,000 to cities and towns in an effort to help them reduce their energy use.  In 2016, another $7,500 will be awarded to a deserving municipality for their conservation initiative.

Maybe your town already has a project in mind for this year, or this contest could help kick off a brand new idea. There are so many different upgrades that your town can undertake to become more energy efficient. Take for instance one of last year’s winners, The Town of Meadows, who decided they would upgrade the heating and cooling system as well as lighting in the town’s recreation centre and fire hall.

Proposals are now being accepted. The deadline for submission is 4:00 p.m., February 14, 2016. The successful proposal will be announced in March. Don’t let your town miss out on this opportunity; you can’t win if you don’t enter!

Check out the proposal criteria and learn more at takeCHARGEnl.ca.

takeCHARGE is a joint initiative between Newfoundland Power and Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro that is aimed at providing Newfoundlanders and Labradorians with information, tools and programs to assist them in using energy wisely.

Scams: Constant, Ever Changing, and Increasingly Creative.

Phone ScamsFrom time to time at Newfoundland Power we are alerted of individuals or companies who are attempting to engage in suspicious activities with our customers. These scammers use a variety of methods to try and defraud people into providing them with money.  A common approach is to call our customers up and tell them their power will be cut if they do not immediately pay on their account via a credit card.  Other times, people have dressed in Newfoundland Power branded clothing in an attempt to impersonate an employee, going door-to-door to collect money fraudulently.  These activities are in serious violation of the law and should be immediately reported to the authorities.

Scams pop up without warning and the perpetrators are always thinking up new ways to deceive you. While we make every effort to alert you when we become aware of specific situations, we ask that you always be vigilant. Whether you’re answering the phone, checking your email, or opening the door, please keep the following in mind:

  • At Newfoundland Power the collection of overdue accounts is always conducted in a professional and respectable manner.
  • We do not go door-to-door randomly asking customers for payments. Prior notification of overdue balances is given beforehand.
  • All outstanding amounts are indicated on your latest electricity bill, and the most up to date info is available online 24/7.
  • Our employees are clearly identified and drive marked vehicles.
  • Credit card payments are an option, not a requirement.
  • If we call you regarding your account, we would never ask you to provide your account information to us. We already have all of the customer information we require.

If you suspect suspicious activity, first please call your local police department or Crime Stoppers (1-800-222-8477) and, second, let us know (1-800-663-2802) so we can get the word out to all customers.
